Top 5 Tips for What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos
July 12, 2022
Engagement sessions are always so fun! They’re an opportunity to get to know our couples and help them get accustomed to our shooting style before their big day. Every engagement session comes with preparation, so today I thought I’d share some of my tips for the most important task of all: picking out what to wear!
KEEP YOUR LOCATION IN MIND
The first decision you’ll need to make when you schedule your engagement session is where you want your photos taken. Is there a place that is special to you and your significant other? If you can’t think of a location, no worries, I have plenty of locations that I love to shoot at. The location for your session will help guide you on what to wear. If you choose a beach setting, a long flowy dress would be perfect there!!
DON’T MATCH, COORDINATE
Matching white tee shirts and blue jean days are long gone. You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family. So if you’re wearing a dusty rose dress, soft blue earrings and nude heels (dusty rose being your dominant color), then he could wear a navy coat with gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a dusty rose pocket square. Now he has his own dominant color (navy) while still incorporating a few touches of your color palette. Ladies, start with your dress first and then work on his outfit. You also want to wear colors that won’t have you both disappearing into the background. If the background and location is mostly dark then wear outfits with lighter tones. Choose colors that bring out your best features and enhance your personality.
FLATTER YOUR FEATURES
We understand that every woman, regardless of her shape, has an area of her body that she’s self-conscious about, so recognizing what area that is in advance is key. Choosing flattering colors and silhouettes that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your engagement photos. Communicate with your photographer what areas you want featured and what areas you would like to avoid and minimize. I want you both to look and feel good. There are many tips we can help with to make you look and feel your best.
CHOOSE COMFORTABLE CLOTHING AND SHOES
If you don’t feel comfortable in your outfit it will show in your photos. You don’t have to dress uncomfortably to look nice. If you hate tight clothing then wear a dress that doesn’t cling to your body. During the session we will be walking quite a bit to different locations. So make sure you wear comfortable shoes with or bring some flats along to walk in if you prefer to wear heels.
THINK MUTED AND LIGHTER COLORS
Avoid bright colors that take away from you both and distract. Think shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with light neutrals like heather gray, creams, white and leather brown. Softer color palettes fit beautifully into most natural outdoor environments. Please try to stay away from oranges and red, as these colors reflect on skin. I hope these tips were helpful and help guide you as you plan your engagement session. Have fun with it and ask your photographer their expert opinion if you need more guidance on your wardrobe!
